Competitions at Universiade Started with Football
Although a little more than 24 hours is left before the Universiade Belgrade 2009 Opening Ceremony, first competitions have already started. Football match between Thailand men’s team and Brazilians opened the competition season in Jakovo.

As expected Brazilians won. The majority of their players compete in Brazilian University league, while some of them are players in national leagues, as explained by their coach. At approximately the same time, at OFC „Beograd“, Mexico and Great Britain ended their match in a draw – 2:2. Finally Mexicans won after the penalty shootout. The very evenly played match between Ukraine and Morocco in Smedervo ended without goals.

The Serbian team won its first victory in a match against Canada. The result was 2:1. The heroine of the match was Jovana Sretenovic, who scored two goals for Serbia. Tamara Jovanovic, the captain of women’s university team says that months long preparations for the Universiade resulted in today’s victory.
- We came to this tournament as outsiders. We will work very hard to change that opinion. We will play the best we can mostly for the wonderful people who came today to root for us. There are two difficult matches before us. We will try to recover strength as soon as possible and to continue playing well.

Like their compatriots, the Brazilian women’s team was celebrating their first victory at the Games. They triumphed against South Africans with the result of 7:1. Equally jubilant were Japanese football players who beat the Irish women’s team 3:0.
