Leaving Best for End
On the last day, three medals go to Iran, two to Serbia while Canada won the first gold in athletics in 16 years.
The last, and maybe the most exciting day of the athletics tournament at UB2009, was full of surprises. Three medals went to Iran, two to Serbia and Canada reached the first gold medal at a student competition in 16 years.
In 4x400 m relay, the Canadian ladies won the first gold medal they had been waiting for, more than a decade and a half. The team consisting of Carline Muir, Amon Nelson, Kimberly Hyacinthe and Esther Akinsulie ran the course in 3:33.03 min, leaving Russia and Senegal behind.

- We are very pleased with our result and happy we will bring home the gold medal we have been waiting for so many years. Relay is not so popular sport in Canada, it only started developing and we hope that our success will motivate other athletes to do the same – said Esther Akinsulie and her teammates agreed.
On the last day, Serbia proved that her athletes are rightfully considered as a pleasant surprise. In 1.500 m women’s race Marina Muncan won and brought the second gold medal to the hosts.
- The race was extremely demanding, I tried to be close to the leading group all the time. I took advantage of their inertia, which finally paid off – said Marina and thanked the spectators who gave her additional strength.
Australian Kaila Mcknight came in second (4:15.10), ant the third to pass through the finish line was Grimau Elena Garcia from Spain (4:17.02). In the 800 m race, Goran Nava won the second medal for the hosts. The difference between the first three places is only 5 hundredth of the second and the champion was Sajad Moradi from Iran (1:48.02).
- I would like to congratulate my opponents. This photo finish is one of the most exciting ones I have ever experienced – said Sajam.
Goran Nava came in second (1:48.06) from Serbia, who already won the bronze in 1.500 m race.
- I went for all or nothing. I lost the group before the last lap as I had been planning before the race. That tactics was supposed to bring me the gold but I was four hundredth parts of a second short – said Nava.

In the women’s high jump Ariane Friedrich won with a jump 2 m high. Yekaterina Yevseyeva from Kazakhstan took the silver (1.91m) and Julia Wenner from Germany took the bronze (1.91m).
In the final 5.000 m race women’s race Akkas from Turkey won the gold medal with the result 14:06.96. Piedra Bayron from Ecuador came in second, while Elroy Galant from South Africa came in third.
In 4x400 men’s relay the Russians won the gold medal (39.21). The Polish team took the silver medal (39.33) while South Africa won another bronze medal. In discus throwing Mohammad Samimi took the gold with 65.33m while Mahmoud Samimi was 66 cm short. The German Markus Munch reached the bronze with 63,76m.

The Korean Deok Hyeon Kim gave the last surprise of the day who won in long jump with the result 8, 41 m, thus defeating Kaba Baji from Senegal.
So on the modern “Mondo” track, which all the contestants at UB2009 praised, the last competition at the 25th Summer Universiade was finished. The athletes had only one remark – bad weather.
