Medal First, then on the net

This year’s Universiade Belgrade 2009 was characterized by good communication between the participants and competitors and their families and friends throughout the world. The information system in the Sports Village in New Belgrade was established and maintained by Telekom Srbija.

- We were entrusted with a very important and responsible task and we can boast that everything was functioning perfectly, from the preparation of accreditations and television broadcasts to vote counting. Our Internet center had over six thousand visitors a day. The competitors mostly chatted with their compatriots and sent them photos and they could also for the first time use the virtual world of communication – said Telekom Srbija PR director Milica Amidzic.
Company officials say that Belvile’s future residents will be able to use fixed telephony services, regardless of whether they are the owners of the apartments where they live or not.
- This was our main idea when we started the project; to do something of lasting value – said Amidzic.

The guests of the capital and the participants in this sports event are satisfied with the Internet speed, TV channels that they were able to watch and the possibility of making phone calls to people in their own country.
- I spend my free time in my room watching sports matches on one of the IPTV channels and it looks great – says a French athlete, Sendiu Zinaida.
Footballers Zmonik Dusanu from the Czech Republic and Sapel Yuanu from Uruguay are delighted with the speed of the Internet because, as they say, they had a feeling they were at home.
Telekom had also provided the participants with several Internet cafes where another service was launched for the first time. These are so-called virtual computers (“thin clients”). Though small in size, these devices fully substitute the computer’s hard disk, and the user was only required to have a keyboard and a monitor and thus have a desktop computer always at hand.

Telekom provided the following key elements of telecommunications infrastructure for the needs of Universiade:
• Network infrastructure for the headquarters and international building facilities, with over 1500 ports to be used for corporate services (accreditation, internet centers and call centers), IP Centrex (IP telephony platform enabling providers to lease value-added services), contact center and other special services for the needs of the sports event.
• The guests could also use a fixed telephony service packet, for the first time as a prepaid option. Both national and international calls were enabled at favorable prices, accompanied by free local calls within the University Village.
• There were triple-play and dual-play services, IPTV, VoIP, high-speed Internet and fixed telephony. Each of 1858 apartments and 330 premises were connected by Internet ports offering services at a speed of up to 100Mbps.
• Prepaid cards enabled calls abroad at a unified price, considerably more favorable than a foreign telecommunications operator’s roaming. It was also possible to purchase one of the cell phones offered by Telekom Srbija.
• Press vouchers for calls abroad were provided for the accredited journalists.
